Cowboy Bedroom and New Dresser

My cute J has a cowboy themed bedroom. It began with a beautiful quilt my mother-in-law sewed for him when he was born. She is a crazy cool quilter, and her creations are amazing.

She chose the cowboy theme because both of my boys were born in Texas. J’s quilt has cute features that MIL free handed (I told you she was awesome!).

I just love the cowboy hat! And the Longhorn star? Yeah!
Hookem’ Horns!

The back of the quilt has a bluebonnet and Texas flag material. Love it!

After seeing the beautiful quilt, I knew I wanted a cowboy room for my little Buckaroo. It worked out well, too, because growing up I had a crazy obsession with cows. Don’t ask me why…I don’t even know. I have a few really sentimental items left though, so I was able to use them around J’s room.

The cow in his bed is one that was given to me by one of my all-time BFFs, and this cow went with me EVERYWHERE. Camp, vacay, sleepovers; you name it. Now J cuddles right up to it, and his little puppy, at night.

I got this rocking chair as a gift when I had Pickle. The denim goes perfectly with the cowboy theme. I love that the cactus is fake and doesn’t hurt – it just sits there lookin’ cute.

Pickle got the Texas Rangers hat when, at the age of 2 months, we went to a Rangers game. The guy behind us caught the ball, and he gave it to our little Pickle. Bless his heart – we were so thrilled!

I wanted to spell out J’s name in his room, but buying some of those cute letters can get pricey. I saw a craft online where the person sewed a letter to a piece of square fabric, and I thought it would be a cute alternative to wooden letters. Because I cannot sew to save my life, I enlisted Crazy Cool MIL to make it for me as a Christmas present. She DID NOT disappoint! She made an awesome banner spelling J’s name. I draped it across the window as an alternative to curtains. Again, this lady FREE HANDED the font. For Reals. I about died when I saw the letter J looking like a boot. Seriously. So cute.

And the little cowboy hat over the O?! A little swooning going on over here!

The back of the banner has the same bluebonnet material as J’s quilt. I also love the twine and red button detail connecting each banner square. MIL – you are magic!

I decided to stretch out the cowboy accessories by removing the boots from the horse on J’s rocking chair and adding them here.

The red bird house is a night light. It was free, and I removed some of the weird “accessories” it came with and spray painted it red.

I turned a little straw basket upside down to look like a hay bale for this ceramic cow to sit on. The picture is one of my faves of little J’s first time at the beach.

This lampshade is a bit of a head scratcher. J’s light in his room is literally just a bulb. (Who designed that?) A friend and I fashioned this shade out of leftover fabric and a free lamp shade, but I cannot FOR THE LOVE figure out how to attach it to the ceiling. Any thoughts?

This changing table has been a blessing. It was gifted to us from a friend who was finished with it. The table has stored J’s clothes (with bins stolen from his little toy shelf). But now he is growing out of this. We no longer need the changing table part, and the clothes are getting too big and cluttery (in my opinion). He is ready for a super cute cowboy dresser.

I found this dresser at a garage sale for $10. (Not to be confused with the $10 garage sale dresser in Pickle’s closet.)

A little banged up, but nothing to worry about! It’ll look great soon!

I sanded down the dresser a little – especially the parts where the paint was chipping.

I collected paint samples for a few weeks trying to pick out a great turquoise color. The winner is Martha Stewart’s Sunken Pool.

The dresser got two coats of paint. This was a little tough for me because it meant I had to buy another container of paint. I had to ask myself, “Do you want a cute dresser, or do you want to save three bucks?” Fine, I want a cute dresser. Grumble.

While the paint was drying, I tackled the unsightly drawers and their hideous knobs.

The knobs had come loose and scraped against the paint.

A little wood filler covered up the mess. I also added the wood filler to the second knob hole – I only needed one.

I’ve never used wood filler before, but I didn’t tell the wood filler that. It just assumed I had, so it worked like I wanted it to.

While it dried, I moved back to the dresser. Combining brown craft paint and a little water, I brushed on the paint and immediately wiped it off. I repeated this step until I liked the way it looked.

Once the wood filler dried, it was dark, so everyone moved into the garage. (Sorry for the yucky lighting.) I sanded the wood filler down and painted the drawers the same way as the dresser.

Next I added the CAAAUTEST knobs. These little rusty stars were $2.99 each at Hobby Lobby.

Now J’s dresser was ready for it’s new place in his cowboy room.

I added a basket with some diapers and a cow from another shelf.

I love how the brown paint ages the dresser a bit and enhances it’s details.

I really love how his dresser turned out! The blue was the exact color I had swimming around in my head, and the rusty knobs are my favorite part. I think it looks great with his little cowboy room.

It’s a bit weird not to see a changing table, though. :(  J really is growing up fast. I better go give him a squeeze before he’s out the door to Prom! Love you, J!

Please don’t forget the CSN Giveaway! If you haven’t signed up to win the $35 gift card yet, you have until Saturday, Nov. 20th at 12 noon EST.

  2. How great! I have a few things that need painting…wanna come play at my house? :)

  3. L.O.V.E. it!! I repaint A LOT of stuff, but adding that extra step of brownk paint/water, really makes a HUGE difference. I can't wait to try it out myself! WOWSA, you got talent girl!

  4. So cute Beth! I've always been afraid to repaint furniture without completely stripping/sanding it first… maybe I'll give it a try now?

As for the lamp shade, I've seen some that have a kind of double wire loop inside, that kind of clamps around the bulb itself. Only ever used them on upright bulbs, but as long as the shade isn't to heavy maybe it will work on an upside down one? Since you already covered that shade with fabric, maybe you can rig something with a wire coat hanger or something? *shrug*
