Teeth Whitener

Idol White Teeth Whitener

If you’ve read Free Stylin’ for even a second, you KNOW I love me some Diet Dr. Pepper. But as a soda drinker, or those of you who may drink coffee or tea often, it’s great to find a quick, inexpensive way to whiten teeth…without buying expensive strips or making a trip to the dentist.

Here is a recipe for homemade teeth whitener…with only TWO ingredients:

Strawberries and Baking Soda!

Strawberries contain malic acid which is great at whitening teeth. Add a little baking soda to the mix, which people have been using to whiten and buff teeth for years, and you have a recipe for a brighter smile.  :)

There are a few ways to whiten your teeth with strawberries and baking soda:

1. Cut the strawberry in half and rub your teeth with the pulp side. Brush your teeth with baking  soda afterward.

2. Mash a strawberry with a teaspoon or so of baking soda and apply the mixture to your teeth with your toothbrush. Leave it on for a few minutes, then brush with regular toothpaste.

3. Similar to #2, mash the strawberry ALONE and apply to teeth. Leave it on for a few minutes, then brush with baking soda.

Make sure you brush well after using the strawberries, though. They do contain sugar, which causes cavities, so don’t forget to brush! Using this method to whiten your teeth once a week is plenty.

Wanna know my favorite part? The price!!

If you already have these two simple ingredients in your home, then it’s FREE baby!

And even if you do have to buy a carton of strawberries, it’s insanely cheaper than a box of teeth whitening strips or a special kit from the dentist.

And that makes me smile. :)

Nightie Night!

Recently I was in Kohl’s and came across this absolutely beautiful Simply Vera Vera Wang 300-Thread Count Silk Cuff Sheet Set.

Simply Vera Vera Wang 300-Thread Count Silk Cuff Sheet Set

Even on sale, the set is close to $100. Hmm. Y’all know me. I’m not a a big fan of that price.

Then I walked around the Kohl’s corner and ran into these beautiful pillows:

Both are $44.99 each.

Ouch.

As I walked away, it occured to me that, yes, I could recreate those items using things I already had at home.

And so can you. :)

Because the satin fabric for the sheet set, and the lace from the pillows, are already deep in the backs of our closets…right, ladies? (Sorry to the one guy who may be reading my blog.)

All too many of us have pretty satin nightgowns and lacey, racey lingerie that may go…underutilized. For whatever reason – the item is now too big, too small, too outdated, or we’re too busy – there is an accumulation of pretties hiding in the backs of our closets, or in drawers, not being used as often as intended.

But, we all know that part of “being in the mood” is ambiance, too, right? So what if the items with the most fabric ;) become parts of our bedrooms – through pillows or sheets or lampshade covers or whatever? And, if hubby, or maybe you, object, then this is an excuse to go out and pick up a new little somethin’ somethin’.  :)

So this was my thought process as I walked out of Kohl’s.

And this is how you can transform your pretty nightgowns into beautiful accessories for your bedroom:

Begin with items that have the most fabric from your collection. These two nightgowns are just the right length…

To make the satin pillow cases, I first grabbed two white pillow cases.

I measured the top of the pillowcase at the opening, which is about 4 inches. Doubling it (because we’ll be adding fabric to the inside, too) gave me 8 inches. I decided to give myself a little wiggle room, so I marked my fabric at 10 inches…just in case.

Because the fabric was cut to wear, it wasn’t quite straight. Using a t-square (or a cutting mat – whatever you have), I made a straight line across and cut.

Flipping the satin fabric over, it was lined up with the stitching on the cuff of the pillowcase and sewn in place.

Next, the sides needed to be straight. Pining a straight line, using the pillowcase as a guide, the fabric was cut and the excess removed.

The satin fabric was then ironed to remove any wrinkles.

The bottom edge was rolled twice to make a hem…

This new hem was then folded over the cuff and lined up. This bottom inside edged may or may not be perfectly straight, and that’s fine.

A straight line across the top of the cuff is what we’re looking for…with a little help from the iron.

Now, the inside hem can be hand stitched.

Beautiful! Just like the inspiration pillow case!

And for a throw pillow, I took my inspiration from the ruched pillow and made it my own.

After cutting up one side of my nightgown, I saved the other as my straight bottom edge. I lined up a pillow to help me get the right size.

One side of the fabric needs to be about 5 or 6 inches longer than the other. My nightgown had a deep plunge in the back, so I used it as my shorter side.

Using pins, I ruched and gathered the fabric until it looked the way I wanted it  to.

As I sewed the two pieces together, I kept the shorter piece of fabric straight with one hand, and I gathered the longer fabric into ruffles. The extra ruffle fabric was trimmed off before I turned the pillow right side out.

Once the pillow was stuffed, the top was stitched closed. I added it to my bed immediately!!

I’m thrilled with the way these cases and throw pillow turned out!! I love the soft satin feel. I think it gives my bed glamour and drama.

And the price? FREE!! Using two pillow cases and two nightgowns I had on hand.

More great news? These items can be laundered – on the delicate cycle of course! ;)

A special thanks to my girls Allison and Deb for their sewing insights!! Thank you so much for helping me!

Master Bedroom Makeover: The Ideas

Well, the time has come…

I’ve loved our deep red master bedroom for so long now that I’m getting a little tired of it. Sigh. Sorry pretty red. We’ve had  our beautiful duvet set (including curtains and dust ruffle) for about…wow – 6 years or so I guess? I know Pickle was a baby when I bought it from a sweet friend who was redecorating her master bedroom.

And I have loved walking into my room when I am greeted by my favorite color. It truly makes me smile.

But…I’m just not feeling it anymore. I’ve decided to go a different direction. So, as much as it felt like taking the family horse out to the back to shoot it, I sold our red duvet set at our garage sale in Florida. Talk about final. (Although the new duvet owner seemed really sweet!)

Now that I’ve lived without a pretty bedding set for a few months (we’re just using a white duvet with the red floral pillow shams above), I’ve had the chance to shop around to see what I’m looking for next.

And I’ve found it!!

Isn’t it the most breathtaking thing you have ever seen?? (Apart from your firstborn, of course…) To me it’s full-on pass-the-freakin’-smelling-salts most swoon-worthy bedding I’ve ever loved. (Red duvet who?) ;)

The bedding is from one of my favorite drool-on-the-laptop online store: Brocade Home. I LOVE their stuff. LOVE. If I could decorate my home with even half of their products I’d be a happy girl. Too bad (in this case only!!) that I live with a bunch of boys! They wouldn’t appreciate all the scrolly and frills I’m sure!

Now this set isn’t cheap: it will cost me about $200 for the duvet and 2 shams. But – I figure I only buy bedding every 7 years or so – which is a little less than $29 a year. Not too bad, right? And since I only pay cash for things, I’ve started saving my pennies for this next big purchase. It will take a little while – I won’t have the bedding overnight, but I am willing to wait. Smooches pretty bed!

I’ve come across a few other things that have inspired me in this master bedroom makeover. Hopefully I can incorporate (most!) of them in the room:

This chandelier from Ikea:

KRISTALLER Chandelier, 3-armed, silver color, glass Diameter: 13 " Height: 68 " Diameter: 32 cm Height: 1 m 72 cm

Wouldn’t it be beautiful as lighting over the nightstands?

And I have a few ideas for mirrors throughout the room…

I’m sure a little color will be added in drapes and throw pillows:

I’ve already got an idea for the pillow (above) up my sleeve! You’ll see it soon!

Because we rent and can’t really paint, I’ve considered a screen behind the headboard similar to this room:

And, I’ve been back and forth about my bed. I love my sleigh bed so much – I have always dreamed of having one – but there is a part of me that wonders if I should lighten it up a bit.

Like this sweet sweet sugar:

(See, it’s still a sleigh bed!)

Or maybe paint…like The Nester? (We have the same bed):

Nesting Place

I’m not really ready to commit to changing the bed…I’m a little torn. Well see about that one. (Although looking at those pictures makes me want to get up right now and do it!)

Anyway, these are a few of my ideas. Some are already in the works, so stay tuned for a few updates. I’m thrilled to see how things turn out. And, of course, everything will be budget friendly, I promise!!

Any bedroom updates in your future?

Green Smoothie

Hello!! I hope you had a fabulous weekend with celebrating Father’s Day! We hosted dinner for the whole fam damily, which is fun, but WAY too yummy! I had one too many treats (who can turn down homemade cookies or garlic mashed potatoes?!). Today I’m feelin’ it. Besides hoping on the treadmill for awhile to pay for my sins, I also made myself my go-to shake – the one that helps me kick it into gear when I want to feel healthy.

I call it a green smoothie; some call it a salad shake.

Either way it tastes great and makes you feel even better!

Wanna try making one? Here’s how:

Basically your ingredients begin with anything you want to put in a salad (no, not croutons and cheese!).  ;)

Today I have spinach, celery tops, broccoli (tops AND stems), cucumber, and zucchini. (No measuring required, really. Just about a handful or two of everything works great!)

In a minute we’ll add fruit – whatever’s your favorite. I’m adding frozen blueberries, strawberries, and 1/2 a banana.

One of the things I love SO MUCH about this smoothie is that I can make it out of anything in my produce bins that NEEDS to get eaten. The stems of broccoli that no one loves, strawberries that are getting ripe too fast, and the leafy parts of celery that tend to get thrown out. Not only is it healthy for me, but it also saves us some $$cash$$ from not wasting, which I’m a big fan of!

After chopping everything into bite sized pieces, I add all of the “salad stuff” first.

When everyone’s in the blender, add about a cup of water. Feel free to add more if needed.

Blend away!!

When everything is completely blended, it’ll look like this:

To me, it smells like…fresh. If fresh and healthy had a smell.

Usually this makes about 3 cups. I divide the salad part in two by pouring half of it in a cup to use for tomorrow’s shake. It just needs to be covered and put in the fridge.

Next comes the fruit!

Sometimes adding juice makes it a little sweeter.

I always put a heaping tablespoon of flax seed in there, too.

You’ll want to add a protein to the smoothie – like tofu or eggs. And here’s where things get a little controversial.

I use raw egg whites.

I do.

Freak out if you want, call the salmonella police. I know. My suggestion is to do what YOU feel comfortable withDO NOT use raw egg whites if it scares you or weirds you out. ****I am NOT responsible for whatever happens to you if you do choose to use them! Um kay?****

That being said, I use three raw egg whites. This is something I’ve been doing for years, and so far so good. ;)  I learned the trick from a football player friend who use to drink Slim Fast with a raw egg white or two as an extra meal.

In place of raw egg whites, feel free to use egg substitute like Egg Beaters, or tofu, protein powder, or milk.

Once everyone’s in the pool, it’ll look something like this:

And, blended thoroughly:

The finished product:

I give it TWO thumbs up!

One thumb for the way it makes me feel, and one for the way it reminds me to make healthy choices the rest of the day.

And, speaking of the rest of the day…Usually there is SO much smoothie to drink, I pour it in two cups. One gets gobbled up for breakfast, and the other I sip on throughout the rest of the day. If I’m snacky, I drink some green smoothie first. It usually gets rid of the cravings for junk I might be having.

I’ve noticed pretty cool changes since drinking my green shakes…

1. It’s aided me in losing 38 lbs (!) in the last year! (All my little J baby weight, plus some!)

2. I am completely full from breakfast til lunch. Ex: One morning The Hubs and I had somewhere to be. He ate cereal and milk. I drank a smoothie. By lunch time (3+ hours later), we could both hear his tummy growling. I still felt full from the morning. Awesome!

3.  I used to just make the shake with spinach and fruit. I lost 4 lbs the 1st week I added the other veggies.

So, do you make green smoothies? Fruit smoothies? If you do, feel free to leave your recipe, or a link to it, in the comment section. Or, if you try this shake, let me know how you like it!! It’s perfect for these warm summer mornings!
Have a great day!
