Placemat Pillows (Sewing I Can Handle!)

Back in April my crazy-fun friend Allison made some super cool, CHEAP pillows out of placemats. Without sewing. For me, the project was love at first sight, and I knew I wanted to make some of my own. A couple of weeks ago we went shopping at the G-Dub and came across these brand new placemats from Target.

They were originally $4 a placemat, but we found them in a set of 4 for $2.

Allison and I each bought two, and I decided to use her tutorial to make my own NO SEW pillows.

Here’s how it all goes down:

FIRST: Begin with a two-sided placemat…one that has two pieces sewn together. Using a seam ripper, open a small hole (about the size of your hand) in bottom.

SECOND: Grab some “retired” throw pillows from around the house. Rip ‘em open and remove the stuffing.

THIRD: Stuff the pillows with the borrowed innards of the other pillows. Fluff and remove lumps as you go.

FOURTH:  *This step is different from the original tutorial because I don’t love sewing.*

To close the pillow, heat up the ‘ole glue gun. Use a fairly thick line across the seams to join them together.

That’s my kind of sewing!! ;)

The finished product:

I added mine to the sofa for a little extra squishy.

This entire pillow project took me less than half an hour to make. It really was “Sew” easy! ;)

And the total cost? $1 a pillow.

I absolutely love that!

Also, you may have noticed some new blue pillows. I also found these at Goodwill the same day we bought the placemats. And, just like the placemats, they were brand new from Target. I saw them on the Target shelf a few days later for about $20 each, but I paid $6 for both. My cute FREE chevron pillows that I painted last winter have retired.

We’ve added a rug to the living room, too…I’ll share more about that soon!

I like that the burlap look of the new placemat pillows coordinate with my Pottery Barn inspired lamps. Cute! This house is slowly but surely coming together!

So – have you made a placemat pillow? If so, please send me a link in the comments! I’d love to see it!

P.S. Allison!!! Come home from your trip already!! Seriously.  ;)

Love your ‘pillows’. I made some this spring from easter placemats that were on sale {before easter!}. They are super easy to make. Love your lamps too!
