Quick Tip: Cleaning the Carpets (From the Free Stylin’ Archives)

Carpet Cleaner

K, so recently someone asked me if I knew of a good way to clean up a large spill on the carpet. They were out of carpet shampoo and wondered if there was an alternative. A couple of years ago I actually wrote a post (one of my first on Free Stylin’!!) about this actual question. I thought I’d dig into the Free Stylin’ archives a little and share the post again because this simple solution is right in your laundry room. Check it out!

***************************************************************************

Today’s little tip is FREE (love that!), so I wanted to let you in on it.

Most likely people stop by your home unannounced. And sometimes you might have a party, or are you cleaning up after one? Are you hosting the holidays this year? Dinner for the whole fam damily? When friends and neighbors stop by it’s always fun to invite them in for a little chat.

As I was thinking about guests coming to my house, I realized I was a little hesitant to invite anyone in because my carpets were dirty. I mean DIRTY. I knew it was past time for a good, deep clean. So recently I borrowed a carpet shampooing machine from a sweet lady at church, and I found a babysitter for little J. (Nice!) All of the furniture was hauled out of the rooms (by myself! Just call me She-Ra!). Now I was ready to clean.

Except….

No carpet shampoo. None. Oops. Blame it on the mom brain. I forgot to buy some. But, being the Free Stylin’ chick that I am, I looked around the house to see what I had on hand…

Laundry Detergent.

Yep! It’s a stain fighter, it’s gentle on carpets (and carpet cleaners), and it makes your whole house smell fresh. And I believe I used less detergent than actual carpet shampoo.

If you are wishing your carpets looked a little less gross, used, walked on, spilled on, or lived in and a little bit newer, cleaner, and brighter, but you don’t have

1. Time
2. Money or
3. A Brain (like me)

then try a little laundry detergent.

Here’s a beautiful stain on my floor – right where the kiddos love to play trains, and near the back entrance which we use all.the.time. (This is the perfect storm.)

Carpet Cleaner

After testing a little area first to make sure my idea would work (and not ruin the carpet!), I dripped a little diluted laundry detergent right on one of the toughest stains. (Make sure the detergent is diluted, or it will leave a residue on the carpet, making it appear dirty no matter how clean it really is.)

Carpet Cleaner

After a good scrub, it’s out!

This is the whole area cleaned.

SO much better!

So that’s my little tip o’ the day: Use laundry detergent in place of carpet shampoo if you are in a hurry and are out of carpet cleaner.

Your carpet will never know what hit it!

And you can have people over without worrying too much about how the carpet looks. (I’m telling myself this more than I’m telling you, really.) ;)

Free Framed “Artwork”

K, so there are times that a large blank wall needs something, …but what? And what if I don’t want to spend a lot of cash on artwork but still want to make my space personal and beautiful to me?

When adding art or prints or frames or pictures to my walls, running out to buy something new just isn’t in my nature. Instead, I dig around in my stuff, go through boxes and closets and drawers, and display items that are personal and beautiful and important to me and my little family.

It’s FREE art. I like FREE. :)

Here are some examples of things that could be used as FREE art in any space:

I love the idea of having a few of the things that are most important to me out and around me. I like giving them a place of honor on the wall; displaying them in a frame or on a shelf or counter or nightstand. These items, and their memories, make me smile. And not spending a dime on random artwork makes me smile even more. :)

Have a great day lovelies!

Tank Top Turned Tote

K, so I came across a really cool project that I KNEW I had to recreate ASAP, and so should you!!

Carrie from Making Lemonade shared a tutorial on how to make a bag from a tank top. While I was reading her (really funny!) post, I kept looking at that bag and saying, “I have a tank top just like that in the back of my closet!!!!” Mine had a few holes in it but was way too cute to get rid of. I saved it for just such an occasion.

Cute Tank Top :)

Not so cute holes :(

Now, you know this project is eeeeeeasy because it involves sewing. And I don’t sew. So. Don’t get scared.

Take your cute but holey tank and turn it inside out. Line up the bottom. Go a few inches up, and cut straight across. (I just cut right above the holes. Those horizontal lines made this a cinch!)

Next, pin.

Now, pull out the sewing machine. Pray to the Sewing Gods that your machine will work just this once because you just need a freakin’ straight line. Pray again. And again. And fix the thread and bobbin. One more prayer.

Sew a straight line. And one more just for good measure because the sewing machine is actually letting you.

Flip the bag right side out and you are done.

That’s it! Seriously! “SEW” easy! wink wink (Oh, and did I mention FREE!!!!)

Here’s my cute bag…perfect for the pool this summer:

Love!

Thanks so much for the inspiration, Carrie!

(And thanks, sewing machine, for actually working, you piece of crap.) :)

10 Free Things In Your Neighborhood

Do you want me to sing the Who are the People in Your Neighborhood song from Sesame Street? No? Are you sure, cuz I totally can. No? Okay. Just let me know if you change your mind…

K, so everyone loves FREE right? Pretty much. And, if your lazy like me, you kinda like to get free things AND not have to go far for it. (Wow, I’m really lazy then!) Well, you’re in luck. Here are 10 FREE things you can find in your neighborhood. (Well, at least in mine. And if you don’t have ANY of these things, you can move to my street. There are two houses for sale.)

10 Free Things In Your Neighborhood

1. Sonic Drinks

Have you ever checked the bottom of your Sonic receipt? Many times there is a survey asking you to tell Sonic about your experience. It takes about all of 1 1/2 minutes to complete, and when you’re through, they give you a code for a FREE Route 44 drink. Here’s the extra cool part, though. SOMETIMES, when you get your free soda, they give you another receipt with another survey. That’s free drinks in a revolving door, people. My record for the revolving drink is three times in a row. :) It’s definitely a game I like to play, and a record I am trying to beat.

Classics

2. Chick-fil-A

Just like the Sonic survey, Chick-fil-A offers a survey at the end of some receipts for a FREE original sandwich. Their survey is just a bit tricky, though: You must complete it in two days or it’s void. I often forget and miss the two day window, so I started taking the survey on my phone right there in CFA while the kids are in the playscape. Then I have 30 days to redeem it. Yum!

3. The Library

Holy cow, if you aren’t utilizing your local library, then you are wasting serious cash. You can rent DVDs, borrow the newest books, and listen to your favorite CDs without getting sick of them. And without spending any money. If there is a book I’ve been wanting to buy, I check it out at the library first. This has saved me $$ because about 9 times out of 10 I didn’t end up buying the book after I read it. I know I really want a book, movie, or CD if I’ve checked it out from the library and still want to purchase my own copy. Careful with the library, though. Late fees can add up quick, so be sure to turn things in on time.

New Redbox Brand

4.  Redbox

Speaking of borrowing movies, we love our local Redbox. (Blockbuster has their own version, too, but I don’t like it as much.) You can rent a movie or game through them for as little as $1, but did you know you could get them for free, too? Every month they send out a code through text message or to your e-mail address for one FREE movie. The Hubs gets a code sent to him, too, so that’s TWO free movies a month. :) Go to their website HERE to sign-up.

5. Rosemary

Yeah, I know…this is kind of random. But there is rosemary seriously growing everywhere near my house. In the neighborhood. By the school. In the Target parking lot. All public places. So get your scissors out, grab a baggie, and snip a little for your home. Use it in recipes, for home fragrance, etc. Now don’t go pulling out the whole bush or cutting too much. Just snip a little…the same amount the landscaper would be taking off in a few days anyway. Also, did you know you can freeze rosemary? Yep, put it in the freezer if you have too much and don’t want it to go to waste. Then pull it out and use it as needed.

6. Curb alert!

There is nothing better than finding something awesome on the side of the road….for FREE…cuz someone else just doesn’t want it. I have found plenty of gently used items that have a lot of life left in them waiting to be picked up by a dumpster diver like me. I’ve gotten paint, furniture, accessories, and more by just driving by and having the guts to get out of my car for a closer look. If you are nervous to take something, then don’t be afraid to go up to the door and ask the homeowner if you can take the item. I’ve done that plenty of times (in the daylight only friends!!) and the homeowners are generally kind and grateful you’re hauling off their unwanted item. Some even offer to help put it in your car. Keep your eyes peeled…it’s amazing what some people throw out.

7. Craigslist

If you don’t already know, Craigslist has a whole FREE section in their FOR SALE area. It takes some combing through…for days…but there are things to find. If you have the internet on your phone, try glancing through the free section when you have a free minute or two throughout the day. It takes some diligence and patience, but your work will pay off. My friend found these folding chairs for free on Craigslist before she passed them on to me.

Which brings me to another point…the power in numbers. If you live in one city, and you have a friend or relative who lives in another close by, tell each other what you are looking for. Keep an eye out for each other. Your item may be in their town, or vice versa. If you see each other often, you can swap your finds.

The Freecycle Network

8. Freecycle

Freecycle.org is recycling community, through the internet, where people can give away the things they no longer need. Joining your local group is free, posting is free, receiving is free. Again, you have to be diligent and patient, combing through mostly items you don’t need in order to find the one you do. Donating gently used items you don’t want anymore is FREEING, too. ;) It’s nice to receive something you’ve needed for free, but it also feels great to be a blessing to someone else, as well.

9. Kids Eat Free

I sure love Kids Eat Free night at our favorite restaurants. It’s nice to give your wallet a break while still enjoying a night out with the fam. No cooking, no dishes. :) If you’d like a list of the places that have Kids Eat Free nights in your area, Google Kids Eat Free {your city}. All kinds of websites will pop up letting you know the names of restaurants and days that your family can dine for less.

10. Shop Your House

Now this may not be so much fun to hear, but believe me…it’s FREE. You probably already have what you want in your own home. You may have to dig for it in the back of the closet. It may need to be painted a different color or cut up and sewn another direction. But you do. You already have it.  Using creativity, shopping your own house can be fun and fulfilling. Case in point: I found beautiful pillow cases in a store that I thought I needed at a price I couldn’t afford. Turns out I already had all the supplies to make my own at home. Check out the whole story HERE. Making a small change with a big impact in my boys’ room was FREE…using items I already had at home. I needed “artwork” in our family room without spending a penny. Check out what I used HERE, and the FREE way I hung the “art,” HERE.

If you have a hard time envisioning what you need from what you already have, one suggestion is starting a Pinterest board to keep any ideas you see all in one spot. I have a board called Using Items I Already Have. Whenever I see a great idea that looks like something I already have in my home, I pin it. For example, here is a project I saw recently:

Scrabble collage of my wee family.

Source

I already have the scrabble tiles, the family picture, pretty paper, and a frame. I could recreate this cute idea right now if I wanted to because these items are in my house.

Or see this utensil holder?

Source

It sure looks a lot like my “vase”:

I’ve never thought of using it as a utensil holder…until now.

So, bottom line. SHOP YOUR HOUSE. It’s amazing what you already have.

I hope this helps you find a few new FREE things around you. And if you have a free suggestion in your neighborhood, please leave it in the comments section for others to see. :)

Folding Chairs and the Power of Spray Paint

K, so I came across this picture recently on Pinterest, and I knew I was staring at my next project:

 Spray painted folding chairs

Source

I loved the fun, happy colors.  And to make things even better, I had just received TWO free metal chairs from a friend. She found them free on Craigslist but ended up not wanting them. I thought it would be fun to spray paint the chairs bright colors for the boys to use in the family room and play room. Woohoo! Party time at the Free Stylin’ household!!

Here are my chairs before their makeover:

I wanted to make this project as FREE as possible, so I rummaged through the spray paint cans and pulled out the pretty turquoise from the front porch updates. (It’s Krylon’s Blue Ocean Breeze.) I originally wanted the second chair to be a fun lime green, but Pickle picked bright red…Krylon’s Banner Red. Although we had to purchase the red paint, I paid with the rest of a Hobby Lobby gift card, so it was “technically” free, right?

Each chair got three good coats of the paint.

While I waited for the paint to dry, I came up with a monogram for the backs of the chairs using white paper and some letters the boys have in their room as my stencil. The letters were just a hint too tall, so I improvised a bit and erased a little here and there.

I cut out the monogram and used a few coats of Mod Podge to seal it to the back of the chairs.

The arm rests got a little makeover, too, with the help of some the maps from my big stack. I cut out a map for each arm rest and used Mod Podge to seal it as well.

And that’s it! The completed chairs:

The boys absolutely love them. The new chairs seem to have a permanent spot in front of the TV.

(Yes, they are sitting in each other’s chair.)

(And, yes, the monogram letters are new toys, apparently.)

This project was fun to make and only took a couple of hours. Using only items I already had (including a gift card!) made this project FREE!!

chairs: free from a friend (free to her from Craigslist)

spray paint: already owned, purchased with a gift card

white paper: already owned

Mod Podge: already owned (you could also use clear varnish if you had it)

maps: already owned (wrapping paper, wall paper, or scrapbook paper would work, too)

Isn’t it amazing what a little spray paint can do?!
