12 Tips for a Successful Road Trip

K, so we’ve been visiting my in-laws for what was going to be a week long trip….and it turned into my boys and I staying for a whole month!! We’ve had such a blast reconnecting with family and friends, playingshopping, and organizing. :)

We’ve since left to go back to Austin, and I realized that there’s a few things I learned on this little vacay. So I thought I’d share those ideas with you (whether my own or taught to me by friends), interspersed with some of the beautiful scenery from the long and winding road between Utah and Texas. (Did I say long? Excuse me while I get a mega phone…) the LOOOONNNGGGG!!!! road between Utah and Texas.

Before you leave:

1. Get your house ready to come home to.

I hate coming home to a messy, dirty house. After a long car ride, that is the last thing I want to see. So, before we leave, everyone takes a task or two and helps get the house to a place we want to come back to. I’m not talking white glove clean, either. I just think of the things that would make me either cringe or feel relief after a big trip, and we tackle those:

Empty sink, empty dish washer. Empty washing machine and dryer. Sweep floors. Wipe down the bathrooms. Vacuum. Make the beds.

On the road tips:

2. Choose a route that includes someone you know.

We always pick travel routes with friends and family somewhere along the way. That way, if we (heaven forbid) break down or have some kind of emergency, we have someone close by to call on. It’s also nice if you need to save some money or can’t afford a hotel. Friends and family are happy to have you overnight, and it’s fun to get a visit in, too. (Make sure you are someone they can call or stay with if they come through your town, too!)

3. Pack your own snacks and drinks in a cooler.

I heard this from just about every friend I talked to, and it really does save a ton of change. Jamie loves trail mix and dark chocolate covered pretzels; I love peanut butter M&M’s and diet Dr. Pepper; and my boys always beg for grapes and Gatorade. Buying your fam’s faves before you leave keeps you from spending too much at gas stations and rest stops. (75 cents for M&M’s before or $1.59 on the road?…it’s a no brainer.)

4. Think outside the “souvenir” box.

*My friend Heather lets her kids grab pretty rocks they find when they stop on road trips. When everyone gets home, the kids paint their rocks to remind them of the vacation.

*I love collecting sand from each beach we go to. I just grab an empty water bottle and fill it with the sand.

*Gina’s friend buys a few inexpensive things for her kids before the trip, and then lets them open the gifts on the road. This keeps her kidlets excited, and they don’t ask for souvenirs at every stop.

5. Activity Ideas

*Allison and her family bring card games like Apples to Apples Jr. along on their trips to keep things fun.

*Sometimes we rent a DVD from Redbox while we’re on the road. The movie is usually something we haven’t seen, and it can be returned to any Redbox kiosk we see. Score!

*Among other activities, we pack puzzles for the boys to do on road trips. A large baking sheet from the kitchen can be used as a lap rest, and the puzzles stay put without sliding off the sides.

*We also declare a “no media” time in the car. Yes, it sounds like poking forks in our eyes, but there is a point when the kids have had too much media time and start freaking out. We shut off all electronic games, DVD players, music, etc. and have quiet time. Kids can read, color or draw, or play with toys. Usually they end up falling asleep, which is my real plan all along. (Bwah hahah ha!)

When your trip turns into a longer one than planned (whoohoo!!):

6. Mix and match your clothes. :)

I literally wore a weeks worth of clothes for a whole month. The only way I could do that was by mixing things up. Pairing cardigans with different shirts, layering things, cuffing my jeans one day and leaving them straight down another.

7. Keep your routines as close to home as possible.

All home rules applied to Grandma’s house as well. Meal times happened the same time as at home. Bedtime routines stayed the same (mostly!). And my little J still had naps, or at least some quiet time, around the same time everyday.

Before you leave for home:

8. If you can, do all the laundry before you leave for home.

If everyone’s clothes are clean and folded in their suitcase, then unpacking is a breeze. And that is one less chore you have waiting for you when you get home. Sure, you’ll have one day’s worth of laundry to do, but it’s considerably less than a whole week (or month!!) of clothes to wash.

9. Pack one small suitcase for overnight.

If driving home takes a few days, pack one small suitcase with a day (or two) worth of clothes and toiletries for the whole family. It is so much easier to take out one suitcase than to pull out and haul every freakin’ piece of luggage and repack the car a million times.

When you get home:

10. Unpack the car ASAP.

*Have a trash bag in one hand, and a “keep” bag in the other. I shove all of the toys and books in one bag to be sorted out when I have a minute inside.

*All the trash is thrown away in the garage garbage can….it doesn’t even make it into the house.

*We also have a portable DVD player that is immediately put back inside. I don’t want my kids to think we can watch a movie on the way to the grocery store.

11. Start the washing machine.

I add the clothes we haven’t washed, plus our travel blankets and pillows, to the washer right when we get home. I don’t want my house, or our stuff, to smell like travel one more second!

12. Don’t make a billion plans the day after you get back.

If you can, try not to schedule a bunch of stuff like Dr. appointments, meetings, or anything too time consuming they day after you get back. And if it works into your schedule, try to come home one day early so you don’t have to go to work the next morning after a long trip. That day after is so much easier when y’all can sleep in a little, catch up on unpacking and checking out the house and yard, and get to the grocery store.

So hopefully some of these ideas will be helpful on your next road trip! They’ve kept me from feeling too crazy (especially when all that driving has made me a little loopy!) :)

How about you? What are some of your best road trip tips? Do you like to fly or drive? What’s your MUST HAVE road trip snacks and treats? Anyone else ready to throw a few movies out the window after hearing them one too many times? ;)

P.S. All the pics are ones I took through Instagram while on the trip. You can follow me under freestylinbeth.

Blogger’s Night Out

K, so the other night I had a great opportunity to meet up with some fun local bloggers in Utah.

Amanda, Elisabeth, Ruthie, Aimee, Tonii, Debra, Marissa, Lindsay, Becca, Erin, Me, and Mary

Our super cute hosts were Lindsay from Southern Lovely and Becca of From Gardners 2 Bergers.

I seriously adore both of these girls…I read their blogs all the time, and when I heard about the meet up, I was so excited to get to go.

We met at a local restaurant and just chatted it up! Although not many of us knew each other (apart from our blogs), it was amazing how fast we all connected.

I was pretty excited to meet Becca. She has so many rock star projects, and I feel like every time I want to try something, I go straight to her blog to see how it’s done. She is a great resource. Becca’s also so sweet…whenever you leave her a comment, she responds to you like y’all have been friends forever. She is such a doll.

It was really cool to sit by Erin. She is super sweet and it felt like I’ve known her forever! She has THE COOLEST new brick bedroom wall, too. Y’all have to check it out!

 Becca, Me, Erin

These cute girls were so fun to hang out with! It was fun to laugh and chat with them, and I’ve really enjoyed checking out their blogs and seeing their cool ideas!

Mary, Marissa, Elisabeth

No blogger dinner is complete without fun swag! Lindsay and Becca hooked us up!!

Fun chalk labels from GingerSnap Crafts

A gift card to SexyModest Boutique… (I stopped in their store the other day and got some sassy new earrings!)

A gift card to My Vinyl Direct! (Oh my gosh they have so many colors!!)

And THE YUMMIEST chocolates from Sweet Tooth Fairy. SO good!

It was such a fun night meeting new friends, networking, and eating yummy food. I am so glad I was in town to be a part of it. (You Utah bloggers don’t mind this Texas girl crashing the party, right?)

Thank you SO MUCH, Lindsay and Becca, for such a fun night out!!

DIY Sand Table

K, so I’m happy to say we made it to Grandma’s house!! (And, I got through that disastrous pile of laundry!) The kids are having a blast getting spoiled by their grandparents, and The Hubs and I are enjoying relaxing and spending time with our family.

There’s always something so magical about going to Grandma’s house. My MIL is so fun and comes up with really cool ideas to keep the kids entertained. I wanted to show you this awesome activity table she made for the boys…using a few things she had had on hand.

The DIY Sand Table

DIY Sand Table

My MIL is so inventive! This fun activity table is outside on the back patio. She found some unused end tables in her garage to use as a table base. The large plastic container that holds the sand was a thrift store find. It’s original purpose was to go under a large dog crate. Luckily Grandma found it new in the box for only a couple of dollars. (Although not plastic, an inexpensive alternative can be found HERE.)

DIY Sand Table

She used a piece of plastic she had on hand and laid it down for a barrier.

The pan is filled with sand Grandma bought from the hardware store. She added sea shells from her visits to our home in Florida. Plastic “treasures” from the dollar store…necklaces, animals, jewels, army guys, etc….are hidden in and around the sand for the kidlets to dig up. Shovels and pails are on hand for my little pirates. There’s even a treasure chest to collect valuables in.

Super easy, and SO MUCH FUN!!!

DIY Sand Table

Our sweet friends came over to enjoy it with the boys!!

Pretty cool, huh? And I love that this table can be made to fit any size outdoor space you may have. A smaller table and pan would work great if you have a balcony or smaller back porch.

And clean up is a breeze, too. When the children are finished playing, the sand can easily get hosed off in a matter of seconds.

Did you ever think something so cool could be made out of a dog crate liner? Not me!

Thanks so much, Grandma, for the awesome sand table!!

The boys love it!

What fun things you like to do at Grandma’s house?

Haven Conference 2012

haven conference button

K, so OH.MY.GOSH have I had a great week!!

Guys, I am thrilled to say that I was able to go to Haven Conference in Atlanta.

This was my first blogging conference, and it was the perfect one for me. DIY and home decor bloggers all in one spot? Sign.me.up.

There were really only two main things I wanted to do at Haven: meet Sarah from Thrifty Decor Chick, and learn to be a better blogger. It’s so exciting to report that not only was I able to achieve both goals, I got to meet so many ROCK STAR women, make some wonderful new friends, and learn a boatload of information that is making my head swim with excitement.

I have been reading Sarah’s blog, Thrifty Decor Chick, since the beginning of time it seems. Sarah has amazing ideas, writes like she’s talking to YOU, her best friend, and is the first blog I ever read. She continues to inspire me with her thrifty DIY projects and creative and funny writing. Plus she loves Sarah McLachlan, NKOTB, and is 5’9″ like me. We were destined to be friends. ;)

Meeting Sarah was #1 on my priority list, and I was nervous and excited that I met her within the first hour or two of landing in Atlanta. And can I tell y’all that I embarrassed myself? For reals. Ever have a picture in your head of how something’s gonna go, and then BAM! You’re a moron? Yeah. That’s me a little bit.

I walked into the room, saw Sarah, and literally cried out, “It’s you!!” Then I asked her for a hug and started crying. I am such a moron. Ms. Blubbery McBlubberson was too busy hugging and crying to even tell Sarah who the freak was hanging onto her. She was so sweet to me, though. She just smiled and hugged me until I could pull it together enough to tell her who the heck I was. Sarah was even kind enough to take a few pictures before calling security. ;)

Check out my big fat cheeser smile. I am such a moron. But a happy one.

 Sarah, Me the Stalker Face

I could have gone home right then and there and die happy, but there was still an awesome conference to attend. My roommates were my friends Jamie from C.R.A.F.T. and Allison from House of Hepworths. (We Austin girls gotta stick together!)

(K, here’s the warning. PICTURE OVERLOAD begins now…)

Gillian from Homes.com is AWESOME!! Jamie and I met her on the shuttle to the hotel and chatted it up! It was fun to run into her and the other “Homes Girls” everyday. They were so friendly and made us feel like rock stars!

 Jamie, Gillian, Me

I adore The Nester. A fellow renter, she is amazing and inspires me to TRY without fear. It was so cool to get the chance to tell her in person that her encouraging words were in my head while I made my 42 Cent Abstract Art.

Haven ConferenceThe Nester, Me

We’ll just call that fuzz “bokeh” and say it was planned, k?

The East Coast Creative girls are just as fun and friendly as they are on their blog (and Nate Berkus!) Jess and Monica have such seriously great ideas…it was so cool to finally meet them.

Haven Conference Me, Jess, Monica, and Jamie

I got to hang out with Angie of Angie in the Thick of It and Breida from Breida With a B. It’s amazing how you feel like you’ve known people for so long when you’ve only just met.

Haven Conference

 Angie, Me, Breida

Meeting Julia from Hooked on Houses was a dream!! She’s on my blogroll, and my sisters and I LOVE her blog. We share posts back and forth on Facebook and sometimes sit next to each other at one computer scouring her awesome blog. Julia is so kind and friendly, too. It was fun to get to know her throughout the week.

Haven Conference Me, Julia

Out to dinner with my friends!

Haven Conference

Me, Angie, Jamie, and Allison

Sherry and John from Young House Love were the Keynote Speakers. It was so interesting to listen to them talk about the evolution of their blog. I could have sat there all day…they are such great speakers and very entertaining!! They stayed on our floor at the hotel (no, I didn’t go searching for their room!!). It was fun riding on the elevator with John and their cute dog Burger. :)

Haven Conference

Sherry and John

The glamorous, beautiful, and talented “carpentress,” Ana White, was at Haven teaching us how to use power tools like a pro while still looking hot. She can make just about anyone (including me!) feel like they can build anything.

Haven Conference

Ana White. I am LOVING the purple heels!

I have been reading Darlene Weir’s site, Fieldstone Hill, for sometime now. I absolutely love her “Ditto” posts. I was fortunate to attend a class she taught, and Darlene is just as kind and smart and full of great ideas and tips as she is online. She even helped give me some ideas to try out in my brown on tan on beige on boring kitchen.

Haven Conference Darlene and Me (in the worst lighting in the history of the world)

One day I found myself lucky enough to eat lunch with Beckie from Infarrantly Creative and the Shanty 2 Chic girls! I kept pinching myself…I have been reading both Infarrantly Creative and Shanty 2 Chic for years. Meeting these inspiring women was such a blessing!

Haven Conference Ashley, Beckie, Jamie, Me, and Whitney

After telling Beckie that my older sister also loved her blog, she made a video message for my sis on my phone!! Of course my sister loved it. :) And I took a class Beckie taught with Julia (Hooked on Houses) and Sarah (Thrifty Decor Chick) that was a wealth of knowledge.

One afternoon I found myself sitting next to a beautiful and sweet girl named “Melissa.” What’s your blog? “320 Sycamore.” Yeah, I’m a complete moron! I’ve read 320 Sycamore about a billion times because she continues to have such cool ideas. Once I recovered from my brain lapse, it was fun to hang out with Melissa and her cute sister, Kristin!

Haven Conference

Melissa, Allison, and Me

Last year I met Gina (Miss Charming), from Charming Zebra, at Austin’s I Love Thrifting Day. It was fun to catch up with her, chat about anything and everything, and travel home together. Love ya girl!

Haven Conference

 Gina and Me

Traci, from Beneath My Heart, and I met last year at GE’s Momsperience. She is seriously a doll…it was so wonderful see her again. She is so beautiful, inside and out. Traci inspires me to be a better mom (and DIYer! Have you seen her kitchen?!). I was able to attend a session she taught about blogging and learned so much.

Haven Conference

Traci and Me

Jamie and I happened to be sitting in the lobby when Layla and Kevin Palmer from The Lettered Cottage walked by. We were able to have a really great conversation with them which was AWESOME. I took their photography class the next day and took so many notes!

Haven Conference Me (with a scary face…what the?!), Layla, and Kevin

Kristi (Creative Kristi) is another friend from Momsperience and one of the Haven team members. It was so fun to reconnect with her! She is seriously a blogging genius!!

Haven Conference Jamie, Kristi, Me, My BFF Sarah ;)

Some of the Haven Team Members: Beth (Home Stories A to Z), Chris (Just a Girl), and Kate (Centsational Girl). These ladies worked SO hard for us, and the conference was a success!!

Haven Conference Beth, Chris, Me, Kate

I am beyond grateful that I was able to attend Haven. Meeting people I have looked up to and admired for years was absolutely awesome. Learning tips and tricks to help me be a better blogger was invaluable. Making lasting friendships was the icing on the cake.

Haven 2013? I’m so there.

If you could meet a favorite blogger, who would it be? (I promise it’s okay to cry when you meet them.) ;)

I’m linking up to Rhoda’s Haven Party!

Happy Summer!!!

 It’s Here!!

Summer is FINALLY here!! I absolutely love this time of year. Outside heats up, life slows down, and time seems to stand still.

Here are my favorite summer words, in no particular order:

beach

swim

sand

fireflies

porch

road trip

watermelon

s’mores

flip flops

So far, our summer is moving along exactly like my childhood…starting with swim lessons…

My cute little J in the pool:

And tents and popsicles in the backyard:

One of my favorite places to visit in the summer is Fredericksburg, Texas. They have THE BEST peaches ever. In the world. For all time. Let’s not even argue about it. Fredericksburg is about 2 1/2 hours from my house, so a day trip is always on our MUST DO THIS SUMMER list. (We also like to stop in a tiny town called Mason for their chicken fried steak. Absolutely delish.)

Y’all know that I can’t sew to save my life. When I pull out my machine, it’s like unleashing the Tasmanian devil from the cartoons…one big mess. BUT! I found this super cute, super easy swim cover up that even this sewing disaster could make this summer:

I know this song came out last year, but Colbie Caillat’s Brighter Than the Sun makes me want to roll down the windows and turn up the music:

When you have a break from playing outside in the sprinkler, I’d really appreciate you taking the time to vote in the One Crafty Contest. I know I ask for your vote every week, and I sincerely appreciate it!! This week’s Round Three is as tough as the weeks before. Yikes!! Please please please take a second to vote for your favorite fabric project!! (You can vote for up to 5 entries!) Voting ends tomorrow (Tuesday) @ 12 noon EST. Vote HERE.

One Artsy Mama

Thank you SOO much!!

Anyone wanna go get a snow cone with me?
