Grandma’s Garden

Hey y’all! It’s the weekend!! Yay!! I thought I’d help you get into a lazy, chill mood by showing you one of my favorite places to unwind and relax….my mother-in-law’s garden.

She has been blessed with not just a green thumb but 10. She has a gift of turning a boring yard into an oasis.

Grandma’s garden is magical.

The Hubs and I actually got engaged in the backyard of my in-laws’ previous home. It was so beautiful – full of flowers and fruit trees and a hammock. Once summer came around, I was often found outside eating cherries straight from the tree while swinging in the hammock. (This was before kids, of course!)

And their current home is no different. Grandma’s yard is her pride and joy. You can wake up with the sun and find her already outside planting and digging and watering.

Here are a few pictures I captured around their house:

The stacked pots on the left were a Mother’s Day gift from my sister-in-law. My MIL recreated one for the front yard. (Learn how to make your own HERE.)

Grandma planted a few trees in the backyard and created her own curbing around it.

Garden

She embellished the cement with rocks and pretty stones. A rusting agent was applied as well for added color and to make the curbing look like it’s been there for a long time.

Garden

One of my favorite features are these trellises MIL built out of scrap wood. The vines will cover the trellis by the end of the summer.

Garden

A finial was added to the top of the trellis and gives it the perfect rustic finish.

Small solar lights were added inside the flowers and come on at night.

I absolutely love the stone steps she made leading out to the sidewalk.

Garden

They were created with the same plastic curbing Grandma used for the trees, but boards were nailed to each side of the curbing to make the U shape. Beginning with the bottom step, the concrete was poured into the U mold and set. Pretty stones and rocks were added to the steps as well.

Both the metal dragonfly and large flower were pieces she found and added. The metal flower actually had a hook attached to it, but it was broken off for the steps project.

I love sitting in the backyard at my in-laws’ house. It is so peaceful, and the scenery is beautiful. The summer evenings are so much more mild in Utah than in Texas, so it’s a nice escape. My sweet boys enjoy being out here, too…playing in the grass, digging in the sand table, searching for bugs, and helping Grandma water the plants.

It’s going to be hard to leave here! We’ve really enjoyed the memories we’ve been making. :)

Hope you have a relaxing and chill weekend! What are your weekend plans? Working in the yard? Are you watching the Olympics? Whatever you do this weekend, I hope it’s a great one!

Summer Salads

K, so it’s only the beginning of June, and I’m not sure about where you live but here in Texas it is HOT. Like the birds have to pick up worms with potholders hot.

And when it’s this hot, there really is no point in turning on the stove to cook if you can help it. I really like this time of year because I can eat a bunch of my favorite yummy salad recipes, or try out some fun new ones. Using fresh ingredients, right in their prime? It’s a perfect little party in my tummy.

Sometimes I make my salad up as I go, using whatever’s in the fridge. Like today for lunch, I chopped up some spinach, shredded some grilled chicken leftover from dinner the other night, and cut up an orange from the produce bin. A little salt, a little pepper, and about a teaspoon of olive oil…I was set. Yum, and fast, and no cooking required. :)

Here are a few easy summer salads that will *hopefully* get you out of the kitchen sooner and back into the pool faster.

Prosciutto, Melon, and Spinach Salad

Cupcakes OMG!

Tuscan Kale Salad

We’re actually having this Martha Stewart recipe with dinner tonight:

Designer Bags and Dirty Diapers

Addictive Brussels Sprouts Salad

Can you tell I think a good salad should often include avocado? ;) Which brings me to my last “salad.” Not really a salad, but close enough, right?

Mango Guacamole

A Baker’s House

I seriously can’t wait to make some of these ASAP. It’s making me hungry for sure. (Why do I always blog near dinner time?) Anyway, if you try them out, let me know! I’d love to hear how you liked them. Or do you have a favorite summer salad? Please share! I’d love a few new recipes.

Happy Summer!!!

 It’s Here!!

Summer is FINALLY here!! I absolutely love this time of year. Outside heats up, life slows down, and time seems to stand still.

Here are my favorite summer words, in no particular order:

beach

swim

sand

fireflies

porch

road trip

watermelon

s’mores

flip flops

So far, our summer is moving along exactly like my childhood…starting with swim lessons…

My cute little J in the pool:

And tents and popsicles in the backyard:

One of my favorite places to visit in the summer is Fredericksburg, Texas. They have THE BEST peaches ever. In the world. For all time. Let’s not even argue about it. Fredericksburg is about 2 1/2 hours from my house, so a day trip is always on our MUST DO THIS SUMMER list. (We also like to stop in a tiny town called Mason for their chicken fried steak. Absolutely delish.)

Y’all know that I can’t sew to save my life. When I pull out my machine, it’s like unleashing the Tasmanian devil from the cartoons…one big mess. BUT! I found this super cute, super easy swim cover up that even this sewing disaster could make this summer:

I know this song came out last year, but Colbie Caillat’s Brighter Than the Sun makes me want to roll down the windows and turn up the music:

Updates…and a Request

Hey Y’all!! I hope you’re having a great weekend! I meant to blog on Friday, but I’ve been working on a project that’s taken up a bit of my time (more on that in one sec…), so you get Friday’s post today. :)

K, so I wanted to fill you in on some really cool things

going on in my little Free Stylin’ world!!

First, I am THRILLED to tell you that I am in the One Crafty Contest hosted by One Artsy Mama!!!

Thank you so much to those of you who voted for the Map Wall in my boy’s room so I could be one of the 20 contestants. I sincerely appreciate it. Round One is tomorrow (Monday!), and the material we’re required to work with this round is BEADS.

I’m not gonna lie…I’m pretty proud of the project I created. It’s one that I’ve wanted to do for a little while now, so I’m excited to have the chance to move it up on the list of projects in my brain. Unfortunately I can’t tell you which one is mine, but maybe (just maybe) you’ll see it and love it and vote for it! So…here comes the request:

I would be SO grateful if you would PLEASE hop over to One Artsy Mama to vote for your favorite project.

Voting begins Monday and ends Tuesday @noon.

You can vote for up to 5 projects.

Thank you so much!!! :)

Next, I’m also excited to say our Ikea office desk was featured on Ikea Hackers!! Yay! Read all about it HERE if you have a minute.

K, on to the random…

I bought this swim suit this week:

All About Navy Tankini Top

Essential Swimwear

I learned about it from another blogger, and I immediately fell in love. Weird part for me? It’s brown and white striped. BROWN. I hate brown…it’s my least favorite color. Not sure what it is about this cute suit, though. I. just. can’t. help. myself. Keeping my fingers crossed that it’ll look good on me. Cuz I’m not sure what I hate more: Trying on swimsuits or waiting in a long line at the post office listening to Amy Grant sing Big Yellow Taxi. Either would be my personal hell. Anyway, I think what clinched it for me was the price: $14.99 for the top, $8.99 for the bottoms. Them’s K-Mart prices, y’all!! :) So, here’s hoping the mailman will speed it up a little and get my cute swimsuit here. Like now.

Since I’m getting ready for swimsuit season, I’ve been trying to kick things up a notch in the fitness and nutrition department. (Don’t really wanna scare small children when I go to the pool.) I came across a YUMMY, healthy recipe recently that I wanted to share, plus a tip you may find helpful. (If you don’t find it helpful, then I apologize. You will not get the next two minutes of your life back. Sorry.)

The other day Natalie, from Designer Handbags and Dirty Diapers, posted a recipe for Veggie Hummus Wraps. And, man, I pinned that pic faster than the fat girl trapped inside me could grab an Oreo.

Designer Bags and Dirty Diapers

Yum, right? And fast, and easy to make, and not very expensive. Love lunches like that. Yesterday I went to the store to buy the ingredients to make my own wraps, and when I got home I noticed the hummus had jumped out of my cart and decided to go home with someone else. Or something, cuz it was not there. Grrr. I could have driven all the way back to the store, but then I realized I had most of the ingredients to make my own hummus: white beans, olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper.

Except…no lemon juice. You need lemon juice. I could’ve gone to the store for a lemon, but I might as well have grabbed some hummus, and we’re back to square one. So, I improvised, and here’s my tip:

I used lemon pepper in place of my lemon juice.

It did make the hummus a little spicy, but whateves. It was still really yummy, AND I didn’t have to drag my lazy, cheap butt to the store.

So there’s a little tip for ya. If you need it. And if you don’t, I’ve already apologized, so get off my back about it. :)

Last, but not least, in the random department…I bought my plane ticket for Haven Conference!! Can’t wait to go. I’m really getting excited to meet bloggers I have looked up to for years, connect with friends I’ve met through blogging, and soak up a boat load of new info to help make Free Stylin’ better. I’m really hoping it’ll be a great week.

And that’s about it in this little neck of the blogosphere. Thanks for stopping by. And thank you (in advance…hint hint!!) for voting tomorrow @ One Artsy Mama!

Tank Top Turned Tote

K, so I came across a really cool project that I KNEW I had to recreate ASAP, and so should you!!

Carrie from Making Lemonade shared a tutorial on how to make a bag from a tank top. While I was reading her (really funny!) post, I kept looking at that bag and saying, “I have a tank top just like that in the back of my closet!!!!” Mine had a few holes in it but was way too cute to get rid of. I saved it for just such an occasion.

Cute Tank Top :)

Not so cute holes :(

Now, you know this project is eeeeeeasy because it involves sewing. And I don’t sew. So. Don’t get scared.

Take your cute but holey tank and turn it inside out. Line up the bottom. Go a few inches up, and cut straight across. (I just cut right above the holes. Those horizontal lines made this a cinch!)

Next, pin.

Now, pull out the sewing machine. Pray to the Sewing Gods that your machine will work just this once because you just need a freakin’ straight line. Pray again. And again. And fix the thread and bobbin. One more prayer.

Sew a straight line. And one more just for good measure because the sewing machine is actually letting you.

Flip the bag right side out and you are done.

That’s it! Seriously! “SEW” easy! wink wink (Oh, and did I mention FREE!!!!)

Here’s my cute bag…perfect for the pool this summer:

Love!

Thanks so much for the inspiration, Carrie!

(And thanks, sewing machine, for actually working, you piece of crap.) :)
